In Their Words…

Real voices and moments showing connection, confidence, creativity and positive pathways for young people.

“Being part of Youth Connect has honestly made me feel like I’m part of something. I’ve been able to get involved in activities and projects where people actually listen to what I have to say, and I don’t feel like my opinions are just ignored. One of the best things is that we’re not just told what to do — we get to have a say in what happens and actually take charge of parts of the projects. It feels good knowing that adults trust us and that our ideas can make a difference. I’ve met new people, tried things I wouldn’t normally do and had a lot of fun along the way. Youth Connect has given me a sense of purpose and belonging. It’s somewhere I feel comfortable being myself, sharing my ideas and knowing that I’m part of a community that wants to see young people do well.”

Having worked with young people for over 15 years, I understand how important it is to build trust and create spaces where young people feel safe, valued and comfortable. While working in the Downham area, I engaged Youth Connect to support us in reaching some young people who had not responded to the staff I was originally working with. What really stood out to me was the approach Youth Connect took. They were able to meet the young people where they were, build genuine relationships and create a sense of comfort within their own local environment. The impact was clear. The young people not only felt comfortable enough to engage with the sessions, but they also enjoyed the experience and began bringing their friends along to the following events. This created a positive ripple effect, allowing us to connect with even more young people in the area. Youth Connect demonstrated a genuine understanding of how to engage young people in a meaningful, respectful and supportive way, and I would highly recommend them in the future as a means to engage young people and increase participation.

Since joining Lewisham, I have visited a number of schools who have worked closely with Alex and the feedback has been consistently positive. Schools frequently speak about the trust she builds with young people, her unwavering commitment and the consistency of support she provides. What stands out most is the value schools place on her ability to engage and maintain relationships with young people who may otherwise struggle to connect with services. Her work is regularly described as impactful, relational and centred around achieving positive outcomes for children and young people. It is clear from the feedback I have received that Alex is a highly respected practitioner whose work is making a meaningful difference.
